Trendy Tuesday – The Maxi Dress

Standard

Time for another trend!  I love clothes.  Even when I’m not 100% happy with how my body looks I still love clothes.  You can dress up or down, make a statement, be comfortable, or glam.  It doesn’t matter.  There’s always something out there for the way you want to look.

I think maxi dresses can work for just about anyone, and I’m a short anyone.  More than anything I think it’s the shape and style you go for.  Given that I’m short a dress with an empire waist (or high waist) is a good thing.  It raises the eye to the smallest part of me (around my rib cage) and makes my legs look so much longer than they actually are (especially when I pair it with 4″ heels!).

This is what I decided I wanted for Easter.  I wanted something bright and different but definitely in the form of a maxi dress.  Too bad nothing in town fit the bill.  I did find this on kohls.com.

I definitely liked it as soon as I saw it but I was worried about ordering it online.  First, I always worry about size given that I like to try things on.  Second, this was listed as “mendi orange” and I was definitely concerned that it could come in some horrible orange that was offensive to the eye.

Also, you may be wondering, given that this is a modesty blog, how in the world I could make the top of this dress modest.  Easy, I say!  I could just toss a cami or tank top underneath and throw a cardigan or bolero over the top.  Instant modesty!  So what I am saying is that modesty was the least of my concerns with this dress.

Beyond the worries there was something that was definitely right – the price!  It was a $60.00 dress but with the sale that was going on and multiple discounts (including one from my aunt!) I was able to score this for around $20.00.  Can’t beat that!!

When this came in the mail my first thought was “the picture didn’t do the color justice”.  It was perfect.  It wasn’t at all what I would term as orange, but rather a deep coral, almost heading toward red.  I already had a white tank top to go under it and was able to find a cute, inexpensive sweater at Target to go with it.  I was officially set for Easter.

This isn’t the best pic of me, I was a little sunburned from the 7k the day before, but doesn’t my friend Kim look awesome??  He he.  I think I look uncomfortable so that’s why I’m not over the moon about this shot.  And my chest/face matches my dress a little too much.  LOL.  Oh and the feet you see between Kim and I would be Aiden deciding to hide while we were taking pics. Also, you can’t see it but even with my 4″ heels, my dress still skimmed the floor.  I’m thinking about 2″ off would be good to wear it with heels or flats this summer.  Just something to think about.

So there’s the trend.  The maxi dress done modest with a lace tank top underneath and a cute bolero jacket over the top.  All of this was done for around $50, including the tank that I believe I got at Old Navy last year for around $10.00.  Have fun shopping!

Friday Flashback – Retro

Standard

There have been plenty of looks throughout the years that have easily fit in to a modest lifestyle.  The looks of the 40’s and 50’s have made quite the comeback lately, and for an hourglass shape such as myself, it’s a GOOD thing!

How could you possibly go wrong with something like this?

Not only is it a GORGEOUS color, but it has a perfect shape, emphasizing the great curves ladies have, while still keeping just enough covered to be appropriate for work, evening, just about any time.  Retro fashion is definitely my friend.

Thrifty Thursday – The Coat on the Clearance Rack

Standard

If you know me, you know I absolutely LOVE a deal.  While I do enjoy having nice things, I enjoy them a LOT more if I don’t have to pay a lot for them.  I know a lot of people have advice for how to save money and I have a few ways that have seemed to work for me.  I’ll start my first Thrifty Thursday with something very obvious: watch for clearance sales.  I love finding things on clearance, especially for the kids given that they only wear things for a short period of time (relatively speaking of course).  It also never hurts to watch for things on sale for me and Gabe.

When I find a great deal I can’t help but tell EVERYONE about my deals.  I want everyone else to be able to get such great deals too.  When I score a fantastic item at a rock bottom price I tell every person in ear shot.  My most recent “can’t believe I got it for that price” find was on Dec 26th.  My lovely aunt Cheryl got me a really pretty shirt from Gap but it just didn’t fit.  It was a gorgeous coral color, which I loved, but it didn’t do a thing for my figure.  I was disappointed but figured I might find something to replace it when we went shopping the day after Christmas.

The t-shirt she had given me was around $25.00 and once I made the return and had the cash in my pocket, I couldn’t seem to find a thing in the store that would replace what I had returned.  That was until I happened by the clearance rack and found this:

I instantly loved the color.  Sorry, I took these pics with my phone a few weeks back and they’re not the best quality.  The coat is a really deep plum color with a faux fur collar and the picture doesn’t do it justice.  It’s blurry but the price tag is obvious.  $49.99 for a GREAT wool peacoat.  A peacoat that had previously been on sale for $79.99, which when all the sale tags were pealed back originally sold for $158.00.  I was instantly tempted.  What a deal already!  How in the world could I pass it up?  Well, I could pass it up because we really didn’t have the extra money to meet in the middle and make up the approximately $25.00 between the money from my return and the cost of the coat.

I tried it on and looked in the mirror and it fit just perfectly.  That’s where my luck kicked in that day.  Given that it was the day after Christmas the Gap store was offering lots of awesome deals, including a small, inconspicuous sign that said all clearance was an additional 50% off – the LOWEST price!  You read that right, the coat wasn’t $49.99, it was really $24.99 plus tax.  After tax my coat was less than $27.00 and I only put in a little over a dollar to make up the difference.  My aunt couldn’t believe I had somehow turned a t-shirt into a coat but I know it was a little luck and little bargain hunting that let me bring this pretty piece home.

Do have luck with the clearance rack?  What kind of fabulous finds have you happened upon recently?

Trendy Tuesday – Booties

Standard

Time to talk about a trend!  If you know me, you know I absolutely LOVE shoes.  More than likely this won’t even be close to the last time that will be mentioned here.  My best friend even got me the perfect card for my birthday last month.  On the cover was a woman shoe shopping and surrounded by all of the shoe boxes with the inside reading: “it’s your birthday – surround yourself with the ones you love”.  I’m telling you, the woman KNOWS me.

Even with all that shoe love going on there are definitely some trendy styles of shoes that I just do NOT get.  That’s what this weeks trend is about.  Booties.  I just do not understand this shoe.

I can’t say that they’re inherently ugly.  I have seen some with great colors and cute embellishments but I’m short and these do absolutely nothing for my body.  I don’t wear pants, only skirts, and these completely cut me off and make me look like I have stumps for legs.  I already have short legs, I do not need my shoes to shorten them even more.  I’m sure there are some long-legged ladies, and some super skinny chicks, that can pull this look off but for the most part, I just do not see the appeal.

Do you wear the booties?  Can you convince me that they’re fabulous and I’m just not seeing it?

My Little Punky Brewster

Image

That little pumpkin over there to the right is my modest girl who has a LOT of ideas about how she should be dressing. Her favorite formula for an outfit is “a skirt, leggings, and a shirt”.  And that’s exactly how she says it.  Normally it’s something like “can I have a skirt, leggings, and a shirt?” or “I picked out a skirt, lettings, and a shirt”.  Oh and every once in a while “I don’t want that skirt, leggings, and shirt!”.  Generally that one is said with yelling and tears because apparently I’m trying to dress her horribly.  She has her own style, that’s for sure.

This outfit, for example, is most definitely of her doing (please pardon the quality, I took it with my phone because she stopped for a minute and I didn’t have time to grab a proper camera).  She actually wore the dress to church yesterday but with brown tights and a cute cream sweater.  Today she has her polka dot dress paired with polka dot leggings and while it’s hard to see, the hood on her jacket has pink polka dots.  I am a BIG fan of polka dots and think they are just lovely but this MIGHT be a bit much.  If I had picked this outfit out it would have probably lead to World War III with wailing and gnashing of teeth but because it is her choice she is more than happy to prance around looking like she got dressed in the dark.  Oh well, at least I didn’t have to pick it out!
